BENEVOLENCE
Widows program & Auntie Kay’s food pantry:
Chi and Dr. Kay Price (Ph.D. and Nurse Practitioner) have been friends and Christian sisters since Chi's student days in the US. Dr. Price visits Susana Homes every year to review the health and nutritional status of the children and of the many recipients from the surrounding communities. She looks over the needs of the medical clinic, and holds medical clinics in the surrounding villages and the local prison. On one of her visits, she discovered that the widows who were attending church at Susana Homes were very undernourished. She began to talk to them and discovered that they had almost no means of support since their husbands had died. She was immediately touched by this need and decided to do something about it.
This program began over 15 years ago when Auntie Kay Price noticed that some of these widows were more malnourished than in need of medication. This prompted Auntie Kay's food pantry, bringing food to them and checking in on them every week. They have tea and biscuits each week and additional food every other week. They also do blood pressure checks, blood sugar checks, care for physical needs, and read scripture and share stories with them. In addition, they bring the Lord's supper to the church members on Sunday. Every week, cooked and uncooked food is provided to the widows to ensure they have something to eat every day.
Charity Friday:
Charity Friday is one more way that the widows are cared for. Every fifth Sunday, which occurs four times a year, the staff, students, and even the young children all donate to the program to provide additional food, detergent, and toiletries to the widows. They go into the village and distribute the items, clean the widows’ homes, carry clean water to their homes and fill their reservoir, and they also help them with personal care. Many do not have family, and when they pass away, they do not even provide a burial for them.
These are just some of the ways that the widows and orphans are being cared for in a loving and God-centered way.
